Science
Safety Rules and Procedures Agreement
To
ensure that science experiments are safe, positive learning experiences,
students and parents/guardians should read, discuss, and sign this science
safety rules and procedures agreement.
The student and science teacher should each keep a signed copy.
Conduct in the Lab
- Follow all instructions
given by your teacher or adult supervisor.
Perform the experiments as directed. Do not do anything that is not part of
an approved experimental procedure.
Know the hazards before you do the experiment.
- Act in a responsible
manner at all times. No horseplay
should occur in the lab or experimental area.
- Never taste a chemical. Check odors only if instructed to do so,
by gently wafting some of the vapor towards your nose with your hand. Be sure your work is adequately
ventilated for your experiment.
- Turn off your Bunsen burner or other heat
source whenever you are not using it.
Never leave a heat source or flame unattended. Never heat empty glassware.
- Eating, chewing gum, and
drinking in the lab or experimental work area are FORBIDDEN.
- Never take chemicals,
supplies, or equipment out of the laboratory without the knowledge and
consent of the science teacher.
- Clean your lab areas, put
away all equipment and reagents, and don’t forget to wash your hands at the end of each work session.
- Indirectly vented, chemical splash goggles must be worn any time chemicals, liquids, glassware, projectiles, or heat are used in the laboratory. Impact goggles may be worn when only projectiles are used.
- Gloves, aprons, lab
coats, or face shields should be used when instructed.
- Wear shoes that cover the entire foot. Clothing and accessories (including ID badges) should not be loose.
- Tie back long hair to
keep it away from flames.
- Read the chemical labels very carefully: read when you pick it up; just before
you use it; and after you are finished.
Review MSDS’s (Material Safety Data Sheets) if they are available.
- Dispose of chemicals and
biological materials as instructed.
Nothing goes down the drain without teacher permission.
- Inform teacher of broken
glass. Do not touch. Broken glass and sharp objects go in
special receptacles.
- Never return unused chemicals to the original bottle. Be careful to take only what you actually need.
- If the experiment deals with something that
you are allergic to, inform teacher.
In Case of Accident
- Learn the locations and
operation of emergency equipment.
This includes eyewash, safety shower, fire extinguisher, fire
blanket, sinks, and first aid supplies.
Know what to do in case of emergency.
- Alert teacher of spills
immediately, including water spills. Wash off chemicals splashed or
spilled on your skin or body immediately for 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing
immediately.
- Alert teacher if you get
something in your eye. Rinse eye
immediately at eyewash station for 15 minutes.
- Notify your teacher of
burns. Treat burns immediately by
putting the burned area under cold water for at least 15 minutes.
I
have reviewed these rules and agree to support my child and the teacher in
maintaining a safe laboratory environment.
