Science: This week students will be finishing up with the beginning of the year classroom procedures and then moving on to our lab safety unit. We will be setting up our composition notebooks, learning the rules of the lab, and a lab safety contract will be coming home next Monday or Tuesday for both you and your student to sign. We will finish the week with a lab that puts us in the role of “Kitchen Detectives” as we try to figure out who stole the class apple pie.
Homeroom: Please make to turn in the SPS lab safety contract as soon as possible.
Monday: Today students finished up our beginning of the year activities with a look into what a classroom should look, sound, and feel like. We had great team discussions and many positive things were said. We will be looking at setting up our composition notebooks tomorrow and a lab safety contract will be coming home, so please make sure to read, sign, and return this as soon as possible.
Tuesday: Today student set up their science notebooks. We talked about the reasoning behind how the notebook is set up, how to use the left and right sides of the notebook, as well as setting up the table of contents and numbering pages 1-51. Students were given a SPS lab safety contract to bring back by Thursday August 22nd so that they can participate in lab at the end of the week. If an extra copy is needed there is a copy in the "Science Lab Safety Rules" above.
Wednesday: Today we were able to explore the classroom to make sure that we were aware of the locations of the safety equipment as well as our normal emergency drill exits. We then discussed the lab safety rules with a mix-pair-share activity using our evidence-based phrases and highlighted the extra important rules in our notebooks.
Thursday: Today we were able to finish up our conversations on the lab safety rules and we then took a look at skills we will need for the upcoming lab: observations and inferences. We glued our notes onto page 12 and then our practice on page 13 of our science notebooks.
