Science:
This week we will be starting off the week with our last lesson of the unit 2.6 “The Rock Cycle”. We will be completing a lab experiment during MAP testing using crayons to simulate a rock’s journey through the rock cycle. On Friday April 26th we will be having our test over chapter 2. Students received their study guides which include the possible essay questions for the test Wednesday of last week (April 17th):
üDescribe one of the rock examples we made in class (sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic lab). Why was that activity a good example of that type of rock? What did each of the ingredients in the example represent?
ü What does a mineral’s streak tell you, and how do you test for it? Why is this a better test than color?
ü Describe what geologists do to determine the mineral composition of a rock.
üYou find a rock with fossils in it. Is it more likely to be a sedimentary rock or an igneous rock? Explain.
Please make sure students have completed their notes packets and vocabulary prior to the 26th. Thank you for all that you do!
Homeroom:
Students were given their 4th quarter progress reports which need to be signed and returned by Monday the 22nd. MAP is this week so please make sure everyone gets plenty of rest!
Monday: We completed the last section of the unit today in class by finishing 2.6 "The Rock Cycle" in our textbooks. Their notes and vocabulary packets should now be complete and ready to be signed after we check our notes tomorrow in class. We also competed in a "rock cycle relay" today so as to continue to explore how to change a rock from one type to another. Students did a fantastic job today!
Tuesday: We checked our last two pages of our notes packets so the packets are complete and ready to be studied. We then started our "Crayon Rock Cycle" lab by creating a sedimentary rock from piling crayon shavings on top of each other and pressing them together between two pieces of wood. Students will be completing questions over the first part of the lab as well as creating the metamorphic rock tomorrow in class.
Wednesday: We continued our "Crayon Rock Cycle" lab by creating a metamorphic rock from our sedimentary rocks from yesterday. Students then completed questions over the sedimentary rock part of the lab as well as most questions for the metamorphic rock. Students will finish the lab completely tomorrow in class.
Thursday: We finished our "Crayon Rock Cycle" lab by creating an igneous rock. Students then completed questions over the metamorphic rock part of the lab as well as some questions for the igneous rock. Students need to come with the igneous rock questions as well as the rock cycle diagram attached to the back completed. Students will be having their test tomorrow April 26th over chapter 2.
Friday: We spent the first 15 minutes of class playing a baseball review game and then we took our test over chapter 2. Scores will be on E-School as soon as I can get them finished. I did notice I had several notes and vocabulary packets missing yesterday so if you could check with your student that would be great. Have a wonderful weekend!
